3 Types of Donors

My name is Kim and I am 51 years old. I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus) at the age of 12. Lupus is an autoimmune disease and it attacks my kidneys. My mom passed away due to complications of Lupus, when I was 9 years old. Her Lupus also attacked her kidneys.

Through the years, I have been through many different stages of Lupus, having good days and bad days. 

After my daughter was born, I went through Chemo for two years to help control the Lupus, but my kidney function has continued to go downhill. I am currently at 8% kidney function and the doctors have told me it is time to get a transplant.

3 Types of Donors

There are 3 types of transplants.

1. Deceased Donor

2. Donor Exchange 

3. Living Donor


The ideal situation would be to find a match with a living donor as a direct exchange. This would be someone who would be willing to donate a kidney directly to me.


The next choice would be to find a living donor that does not match, and we are entered into

The next choice would be to find a living donor that does not match, and we are entered into the Donor exchange program.


With a deceased donor, it can take between 3-5 years. If I wait this long, I will have to do dialysis which is not ideal for my situation.
